Grief Support and Bereavement
All Hospice Team members to some degree are trained in and assist patients and family members to cope with grief and bereavement. The variation in how individuals experience loss is immense and may include anticipated loss. Hospice Team members plan to assist the hospice patient and family members cope with loss during the patient’s illness, at the time of death, and offers bereavement services thereafter for a minimum 13 month period. Bereaved family members may or may not accept the bereavement services offered, but the Hospice program periodically checks in on all bereaved family members for at least 13 months.
Bereavement and grief support services are available for persons who did not participate in the Hospice Program. Those who did participate in the Hospice Program but declined bereavement services may decide, at any time, to initiate bereavement services.
Bereavement services include discussions with trained bereavement specialists, the distribution of helpful literature and referral services.
Grief Support groups are sponsored at least three times each year: Spring (in East Jordan), Summer (in Charlevoix) and Fall (in Boyne City). The grief support groups feature five weekly small group meetings facilitated by trained grief and loss support counselors.
Memorial Events are another way Hospice of Northwest Michigan helps community members cope with grief and loss while commemorating their loved ones. In November, National Hospice Month, we sponsor an annual Memorial Service the first Sunday in November and we also sponsor a “Handling the Holidays” workshop to assist persons to cope with the often intensified feelings of grief and loss during the holiday season. To your left on this page is the Hospice Calendar, lists current and upcoming events.
